Quarterly Recap: Sand Removal, Community Impacts, & Events

Sand! Sand! Sand! and even more Sand!

In collaboration with Councilwoman Traci Park’s office, the BID’s Clean Team kicked off the second quarter with a major sand removal effort. Our team worked tirelessly to clear large amounts of sand from the intersections of Horizon & Ocean Front Walk as well as Park & Ocean Front Walk. In total, they filled up and removed one hundred eighty five sandbags, each weighing approximately 45 lbs. That’s a collective total of 8,325 lbs of sand—equivalent to about 4.2 tons—cleared from our streets and sidewalks.

An exciting aspect of this project is the repurposing of the sandbags. They were transported to the community of Pacific Palisades, where the Bureau of Engineering for the City of Los Angeles had recommended using sandbags to secure a hazardous area near a scenic hilltop. We were thrilled to be able to help make a difference in another part of our Council District (CD11). We deeply appreciate the hard work of our Clean Team members and the great partnership with CD11 staff!

Safe Team’s Community Impact

Everyday, our Safe Team focuses on preventing and deterring crime within the district, but also works hard on fostering community connections. A typical day for our Safe Team involves routine patrols, business engagements, ambassador interactions with the public, and responding to service calls or altercations observed while on patrol.

This quarter, a notable story unfolded when our team quickly responded to a call about a disturbance at Rose and OFW. Through effective de-escalation, they were able to gather valuable information about the individual involved.

Later that day, during an ambassador interaction, a man approached the Safe Team with a photo of a woman he had been searching for. Remarkably, it turned out to be the same woman the team had engaged with earlier. The man showing the photo was her father, and our officers were able to direct him to where his daughter was staying, resulting in a much needed reunion.

Athens Services: Enhancing Waste Management Compliance

We’re happy to share that Athens Services will be enhancing their support for our local businesses. Over the coming weeks, they will conduct educational outreach to offer essential information and resources on complying with city ordinances for proper waste disposal.

Their representative will visit businesses throughout the district to offer personalized guidance and assess the best solutions for achieving compliance. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that all businesses are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to manage waste effectively and adhere to city regulations. We appreciate Athens Services’ commitment to supporting our community and helping us maintain a clean and sustainable environment.

If you need help getting connected with Athens Services, please reach out to the Venice Beach BID and we will be more than happy to assist.
